Ingredients
5 large onions sliced thin
1/2 stick of butter
2 large garlic gloves minced
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1 tbsp thyme
5 cup chicken broth
3 cups beef broth
Liquor
1/4 cup sherry wine
1/2 cup white wine. I use Pinot Grigio
1/4 cup cognac
1 tbsp Disaranno
Topping
French bread cut into cubes
Grated Parmesan cheese
Shredded Gruyère cheese
In large pot sautéed onions in butter over medium heat, stir frequently for about 40 minutes. Cook until onions look burnt. Add all ingredients except the topping. Turn down to low heat cover and cook 30 minutes or all day.
Scoop soup into oven proof bowls
Sprinkle Parmesan cheese over soup, add cubed bread and top off with grated Gruyère cheese. Broil French onion soup till cheese is melted and crispy.
